As a climber I have noticed two trends in the past few years; the number of people coming to climbing gyms and the increase interest in sports nutrition amongst amateur athletes. Sports nutrition is on the rise with 1 in 4 people in the UK consuming ‘sports nutrition’ products, with many of said products being sold in gyms themselves or online. Alongside this many regular gym goers are taking up climbing, in particular bouldering, to add variety to their fitness regime and add a more social element. Therefore the increased trend in sports nutrition in particular protein supplements to aid climbing training is not surprising. What is surprising however is the limited number of nutritional products targeted to climbing or information on how climbers can utilise nutrition to improve their climbing training. I hope to combine knowledge from my degree in Food Science and Nutrition with my passion for climbing to explore this area further.
